Working in the Philippines |Filipino Workers & Salary Issues

With 7,641 islands to explore and discover, the Philippines is one of the best places to visit if you are looking for new adventures. The country’s tourism industry has grown, and the percentage of foreign tourists who have visited the country has risen dramatically in recent years. It’s no surprise that a slew of new businesses are sprouting up like mushrooms after a rain. It isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it only means one thing. We Filipinos have a lot ofย job opportunities.

Filipino skilled workers are regarded as world-class, which explains why we are adept at working in a variety of departments. According to aquavir.ph, the following are some of the fundamental characteristics of a Filipino worker.

  1. A workforce that is highly educated and literate, with a strong command of the English language. This promotes open communication among employers, applicants, coworkers, and business clients, paving the way for smooth working and business relationships.
  2. Filipinos have a track record of dedication to their profession and have strong moral and ethical values.
  3. Filipinos are of Malay ancestry, which has been enriched over time by Chinese, Muslim/Arab, Spanish, and American blood. As a result of their character being a unique blend of said cultures and traits, his/her adaptability to foreign cultures is greatly increased..
  4. Because of the culturally ingrained trait of filial obligation, Filipinos are responsible, dependable, and hardworking. We also likeย taking care of the sick family members, sending money to help pay for the education of family members and miscellaneous family needs.
  5. Because of the Philippines’ difficult working conditions, Filipinos have a high tolerance for pressure situations and are used to giving their all while working various shifts in remote locations under high-stress conditions.

These characteristics/qualities are among the reasons why most foreign companies/employers prefer Filipino employees. We can contribute to the company’s objectives and are highly competitive.

With these qualities, we are expected to earn a high salary, but this is currently impossible. This is the disadvantageous part; it is very upsetting that a Filipino worker’s monthly salary is 9,000-13,000PHP (it depends where you are working and what kind of job you have). I understand that experience is a major factor in determining how much you will earn, but it is still disappointing to say the least that we are very dedicated to our jobs and deserve more than that. This is also one of the reasons why some Filipinos prefer to work in other countries. A month’s salary in the Philippines will not be enough to feed a whole family, let alone pay the bills.

According to the Philippines Statistics Authority, the total number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who worked abroad at any time between April and September 2017 was estimated to be 2.3 million.

These OFWs, or Overseas Filipino Workers, work in a variety of fields and have varying levels of expertise. Working abroad for many years, enduring loneliness away from home in order to provide for their families.

I can only hope that the day will come when Filipinos will no longer need to travel abroad in search of a better and larger salary. Working here benefits not only their families, but also the communities.
